How to Fish: Make a Private Lobby and Change Session Type

Use the private-lobby option to host a session that is joinable only through invitations. For an existing session, change its type in the in-game server settings, then restart: Patch 1.0.5 explicitly requires a restart after this change.

What to do

  1. Update the game before arranging the session. Private hosting was added in 1.0.5; the latest official announcement found for this guide is 1.0.12. Ask your group to finish updates before testing a join.
  2. For a fresh lobby, select the private option when hosting. For a session already running, open server settings and change the session type. Do not assume the change has applied immediately.
  3. Plan a stopping point with your group, save your progress and restart after changing the type. The patch does not specify whether a lobby restart alone is sufficient; a conservative checklist is to quit and relaunch the game, then check the hosting setting again.
  4. Invite one intended player first and ask them to confirm they reached your session. This is a simple setup check before gathering the whole group. If it fails, note whether the invitation never arrived, was accepted but stalled, or produced an error; use the linked co-op troubleshooting guide for that separate problem.
  5. Before resuming a boss route, agree who will carry the summon item and who will keep the quest drop. Open the protected-item list together so a successful reunion does not end with someone selling the next quest hand-in.

Before you leave this page

Private hosting controls how players join; the announcement does not describe removing players who are already connected. This page verifies the documented setting and restart requirement, not a specific button sequence or an in-game connection test. Back up a valued campaign before broader troubleshooting, and keep the original save while investigating.
