How to Fish Save Location and Safe Backup

Official Patch 1.0.12 added Steam Cloud saves. To upload an existing save, play and exit once on the PC that already has it. On Windows, PCGamingWiki also documents local TXT saves under %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Dazed Games\How to Fish\Saves\; keep a separate backup before moving or editing anything.

What to do

  1. On the PC that holds the correct save, update the game, play once and exit normally. The Patch 1.0.12 announcement says this uploads that save to Steam Cloud.
  2. Close the game before making a manual copy so the save is not being written while you back it up.
  3. Open File Explorer and paste the documented Windows folder path into the address bar. If it is absent, verify the Windows account and whether the game has created a save.
  4. Copy the full Saves folder to a separate location with a date in the backup name. Keep the original untouched even after Steam Cloud syncs.
  5. Use GillGrid's read-only inspector for file structure and candidate fields. It runs locally and does not upload the selected file, but it does not yet guarantee automatic fish, Drip or achievement mapping.

Steam Cloud support is official as of Patch 1.0.12 (4 Sep 2026). The Windows path is a community-wiki report and may differ on Proton or another platform. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for an independent backup, and GillGrid cannot guarantee recovery.
