How to Fish Steam Cloud: Move an Existing Save to Another PC

How to Fish added Steam Cloud in patch 1.0.12. To upload an existing save, the developer says to play and exit the game once on the computer that holds it. Start there before trying to continue on another PC.

What to do

  1. Preserve your starting point: close the game and make a dated local backup using the linked backup guide. Note your save name, current island and last completed quest so you can recognize the right campaign later.
  2. Update How to Fish on the original PC. In Steam, check both the global Cloud setting and this game's Properties: Valve documents that either setting can disable synchronization.
  3. On that original PC, launch your existing campaign, confirm it is the one you want, and exit the game normally. This is the game's documented first-upload step; installing it only on the destination PC does not perform that step on the original machine.
  4. Leave Steam running and online until its synchronization finishes. Valve describes uploads after the game exits and downloads before launch on a different computer. Wait for that handoff before switching devices.
  5. On the other PC, sign into the same Steam account and check its Cloud settings before launching. Compare the loaded campaign with your notes: island reached, quest progress and expected equipment. Keep your original backup until you are satisfied.
  6. If the save is missing or Steam reports a conflict, stop before overwriting anything. Record the exact message and which computer last had the desired progress. Recheck the original-PC upload and both Cloud settings; do not select a conflicting copy just because it is labelled local or cloud.

Before you leave this page

This is a transfer checklist, not a tested repair for every sync error. The official announcement confirms Cloud support, not recovery of an already overwritten save. GillGrid's collection checkboxes are separate browser-local notes: Steam Cloud does not migrate GillGrid's tracker, and the local inspector cannot report Steam sync status.
