How to Fish: Change Difficulty When a Boss Is Too Hard

You can change difficulty from the main menu or in-game. Easy gives creatures 25% less health and 50% less damage than Normal; Hard adds 25% to both. If repeated deaths are blocking a boss, try Easy before your next attempt.

What to do

  1. Identify the blocker first. If you can summon the boss but keep dying, difficulty is a useful next check. If the boss never appears or the next island is still locked, open its catch plan and check the required bait or quest hand-in instead.
  2. Open settings from the main menu or while playing and select Easy for a lower-pressure retry. Patch 1.0.9 explicitly allows both entry points. Set it before summoning: the announcement does not explain whether an already spawned creature is recalculated immediately.
  3. Read the changes against Normal: Easy uses 75% creature health and 50% creature damage; Normal keeps the original default tuning; Hard uses 125% of each. These are creature-stat modifiers, not a promise that a fight takes exactly 25% less time.
  4. Prepare a repeatable attempt. Use the linked boss record to check the summon item and required drop, then choose one thing to practice, such as avoiding an attack before taking your next shot. Note whether you are losing to damage or failing to finish the encounter; that is more useful than changing several parts of your setup at once.
  5. After a win, check the next quest hand-in before selling the drop. Use GillGrid's protected-item list and route assistant to plan your next action. If you want a tougher later attempt, return to the difficulty setting and choose Normal or Hard.

Before you leave this page

The official notes establish the settings and creature modifiers. They do not establish achievement eligibility, Drip odds, loot changes or multiplayer scaling for each mode, so this guide makes no promises about those. Later patches also rebalance individual creatures: a launch-era boss health number is not a reliable current baseline. This is a source-checked planning guide, not an in-game test of difficulty switching.
